Installation of underground substation in Knokke-Heist

To meet the increasing energy demand in Knokke-Heist and to make the electricity supply future-proof, grid company Fluvius is renovating and expanding an underground switching station, 50 meters from the sea dike. Fluvius contacted Deba, the specialist in medium-voltage installations, to help realize this power expansion.

Inventive craftsmanship at all levels is required to bring this project to a successful conclusion.

The renovation of the existing substation is anything but routine. Given the fact that the medium-voltage cubicles all have to be placed in an underground cellar of the Grand Hotel residence. Fortunately, our Deba colleagues can think ‘out of the box’ in unusual situations, and call upon our years of experience (over 40 years). Providing an extra safety is very necessary in the underground cellar, because in case of a short-circuit, there is no way out for the overpressure. Switchgear Company’s Arc-Killer offers the solution in this case. The ‘arc-killer’ extinguishes possible short-circuits in the blink of an eye.

We thank Fluvius for its trust in Deba and for the photo.

As you can see, there are only smiling faces.
Our employees love their job and don’t shy away from ‘more difficult’ projects. This is precisely the challenge! Delivering a good result gives an even greater sense of satisfaction.

Ecologically sustainable project
Environmentally friendly public transport must contribute to achieving the climate objectives that Europe has imposed on Belgium. Starting mid 2021, no less than 10 new electric buses will be used for city and regional traffic in the Hageland.

Deba also indirectly contributes to a more environmentally friendly world. Ducatech commissioned us to install the high-voltage cabin. This way, the power for the electric buses is generated by means of solar panels. At night, the buses are charged with Tesla Powerpacks. The large battery capacity means they can run all day without needing to be recharged.

𝑷𝒖𝒓𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆?

The containers are being used to secure distribution from a newly constructed gas plant outside Moundou to a distribution station in Moundou, Chad’s second largest city. The installation is fully custom-made and has now been given final approval. And so it’s ready for take-off to Chad, where it can be put into service immediately.

New dispersion station Fluvius Skytower district Ostend.

Deba was responsible for the delivery and installation of the medium voltage switchgear, an air-insulated switchboard well known on the Belgian market, intended for a Fluvius dispersion station.

This dispersion station will supply electrical energy to the Skytower district of Ostend. It is a prestigious residential construction project consisting of two towers and  a residence with  luxury apartments, close to the port and the shopping streets.

Ready for connection to the Fluvius medium voltage network!

Our best wishes and a different 2021!

Reference project for a container solution SNE Chad.

We are proud of our new CX-2 Power Container, a realization for the customer SNE (Société Nationale d‘Électricité) responsible for the production, transport and distribution of Electricity in Chad.

Thanks to more than 40 years of experience, Deba has grown to a market leader position and can call itself a specialist in installations of medium voltage switchgears. All installations and multiple housing solutions are possible. Deba is responsible for the follow-up from A – Z, from design to delivery and installation.

Through our many years of expertise, today we even export our installations: to Africa, Asia, South America and the Middle East. For this reason, we developed the CX-2 concept.

A pre-installed medium voltage solution in a container CUSTOMIZED to the needs of the client.

Project?

For this project, Deba opted for a modular system: the DF-2 medium voltage switchgear from Switchgear Company and the distribution transformers from Cotrabel.

Two containers were provided for the installation of the medium voltage switchgear.

One 40-foot container for the protection cubicles and one 20-foot container for the peripherals. It concerns single used sea containers that have been reworked for this project to serve as a substation. For example, doors and lightings were placed in the containers and insulation plates were applied to the side walls. The containers are white as this reflects best the sunlight. Also, the cooling of the containers is designed to be efficient in an environment of up to 50 degrees C. After the installation of the medium voltage cubicles, the containers are shipped. Subsequently, these containers will be set up on concrete piles in Moundou (Chad).

Biggest advantage of a container solution?

It is a turn-key solution. All connections and assemblies are ready to get started right away!

Thanks to the customer, but of course also to the Deba team, for the realization of this project:

Jonas Claeys (project manager)

Filip Geurs (project engineer)

Sébastien Copay (project engineer)

Case study of the windmill project.

Deba is also available for projects related to sustainable energy!

In the context of the day of sustainability, we would like to explain a realized project on renewable energy. We asked some questions to Nico Di Stefano (Sales and project engineer renewable energy at Deba) for our case study of the Gheys wind turbine project.

How did the project came off the ground?

The request came from a customer, Yvo Pellens, with whom we have a good relationship for years already. He is responsible for industrial electricity works and renewable energy for various companies.”(Nico Di Stefano)

What was the aim of the project?

“Producing renewable energy in a sustainable way on the site in Genk of the transport and logistics company Gheys.”

“This project fits perfectly within Deba’s sustainable vision on business.  So we were happy to start our partnership and to work together on this project. Deba was responsible from A –Z for the elaboration of this project: from design to delivery and installation. For example, we also supplied and installed the high-voltage cabin and peripheral equipment. It is a project where a lot of “energy” has been invested. It started in 2019 and the wind turbines were fully operational at the end of May 2020. We are very proud of the result ”(Nico Di Stefano)

Producing sustainable energy: What exactly does the project entail?

The installation consists of a principal distribution post from CDC that feeds 4 subcabins.

All cabins are equipped with DF-2 modular medium voltage cubicles from SwitchGear Company (SGC).

The cubicles are equipped with a disconnecting relay, RP600 DIGITAL PROTECTION RELAY and a Bi-Di relay as general protection. The cubicles that were placed are of the type AA-31 and AA-35. The distribution transformers are supplied by Cotrabel.

Two windmills serve as sources of renewable energy  for the site of the firm Gheys and can generate no less than 4.5 MW of energy. This energy is used for the bulk trucks, silos, production lines and containers in the rinsing hall which are large energy consumers. The total project has an integrated capacity of 4.5MW. The Gheys company complies with the strictest environmental standards, partly thanks to the generation and use of renewable energy for the rinsing hall, but also for other activities. The medium voltage installation was inspected by AIB Vincotte & Electro Test, which means that Gheys now possesses over the green power certificate.

Why choose Deba?

“It was obvious to choose Deba for this collaboration as medium voltage specialist. More specifically because of their knowledge and expertise in connecting renewable energy systems to the medium-voltage grid. The windmill project was born!”(Yvo Pellens)

“We are the ideal partner for the study, conceptualization and putting into service of  energy saving systems at high voltage level and to connect these systems from the low to the medium voltage grid! Study offices often call on us for this. ”(Nico Di Stefano)

In short, Deba is a Belgian company with more than 40 years of experience. Our aim is to assist our clients with their projects and to guarantee them a flawless follow-up: from delivery and installation to putting the medium voltage cabin into service.

The motto?

Our motto is to help companies  to do business in a more sustainable way and to rely on renewable energy for this. Deba can help you! We respond lightening fast on all yours demands!

Student Bert Deseine: “Medium voltage is fascinating”

Since a few months we see regularly a Master student, Bert Deseine, walking around and working in our medium voltage museum in Nevele. Bert is a last year student in Electrotechnic and is finalizing his master thesis about – how else – medium voltage. Our companies are trying to support him as well as possible. We took Bert for a short talk.

Bert, last year you decide to make a master thesis about medium voltage. How did you get the idea?

Bert: Medium voltage really captivated me immediately. I am a student in the department of Kortijk of the University of Ghent were I finalize my studies in Electrotechnic speciality Industrial Sciences. Last year I came with my class in Nevele for a visit of Deba, SGC SwitchGear Company and Mevoco. I immediately found the medium voltage sector very interesting. In the lessons at school, the focus is essentially oriented to domestic electricity. The fact that I did not know much about medium voltage makes it exciting to choose for a relatively “new” topic.

“The subject attracted me immediately”

And for this master thesis you are coming regularly to work in our medium voltage museum in Nevele.BertDeseine

Bert: Yes indeed, I am coming once or twice per week in your museum. I am at the source of the information, have all equipment available and can easily put the questions and receive the needed input. An employee of R&D of Mevoco is in fact one of my promoters.

The medium voltage world is of course very large. What are you precisely talking about in your master thesis?

Bert: The title of my thesis is: “Evolution of the switching techniques and evolution of the security in medium voltage switchgear”. Briefly, my work is focusing on how the security of medium voltage switchgear is improved or guaranteed, through the changes in the switching equipment. Therefore, I take all relevant equipments in history under the magnifier and discuss among other things, their operation, technical specifications and improvements compare to older equipments. I also try to make a simulation per equipment.

“Like to deeper analyze the future of switching equipment “

What are you willing to prove and reach with your analysis?

Bert: I try especially to describe the historical evolution. If I still have time, I would like to dedicate a part of my thesis on how the future of the switches and the associate security aspect will evolve or look like. But a master thesis is a long process. The deadline for my thesis is in a few weeks. I don’t know if this will still be reachable (laugh).

We wish you already all the success.
